Our bodies need minerals to stay healthy. Just like with most vitamins, minerals need to be consumed regularly as we do not synthesise them internally.
Magnesium (Mg) is a mineral that participates in hundreds of functions in the body. Health benefits are therefore wide-ranging. We have listed some of our favourites:
- Boosting heart health as it regulates blood pressure and regulates heart rhythm
- A healthy immune system due to its active transport and communication properties
- Recovery; its relaxing effects on the nervous system decreasing cortisol release (our stress hormone), anti-inflammatory properties as well as contracting muscles
Eating a well-balanced diet can help ensure your body gets the magnesium it needs to perform all its functions. Many modern diets, however, include highly processed foods which are magnesium depleted.
Magnesium is mostly concentrated in plant foods so make sure you eat plenty! Rich sources include: dark leafy green vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. Perhaps introduce a green smoothie into your daily routine?
We also like obtaining magnesium through taking Epsom salt baths. Epsom salts are a natural mineral compound of magnesium and sulphate. Magnesium and sulphate are both readily absorbed through the skin and into the body’s blood stream. Bathing in these salts will therefore allow your body to reap the health benefits of the magnesium as well as the sulphate which has detoxification capabilities.
